Popolopen Gorge
Leaving from Bear Mountain Inn we will walk past Hessian Lake and cross the road to the trail head. Our hike will take us along Popolopen Creek and Hell Hole up to the Aqueduct. There is some strenuous up and down on a trail, no rock scrambles and then it is a moderate walk through the forest. We can stop at Queensboro Lake for a lunch and then we will continue the hike going through Doodletown, maybe a short break at the reservoir and we will end at the Inn. This hike is approximately 7 miles and hiking boots or shoes are recommended.
Bear Mountain to Perkins Tower
This hike takes us to an elevation of 1350 ft from sea level. We will hike up one side of Bear Mountain and continue up to views of New York City from the top and the historic Perkins Tower. To return to the Inn we will hike on the Appalachian Trail. The hike is 3 miles round trip and approximately 3 hours. During the summer months it is very crowded on the trail and the top.
West Mountain
This hike is one of my favorites and there are lots of viewpoints. It is strenuous and will require hiking boots or shoes. We will leave from Bear Mountain Inn and follow several trails to the top of West Mountain. The return trail follows a rugged trail for about one mile and hands and feet will be needed for a couple of spots on the trail. It is approximately 6 miles and will take about 4 hours. Don't forget to pack a lunch or a snack for a break with a gorgeous view.
Bald Mountain
Another one of my favorite hikes this hike will take us to beautiful views of the Hudson River and Bear Mountain. It is a strenuous hike that is always going up. You will need to wear hiking boots or shoes. During the fall and early spring we will be able to discover two old mines, in the summer there is lots of growth so they are harder to spot. About 5 miles and approximately 4 hours.
